Nursing student learning outcomes for level 1:

Upon completion of the first two semesters of the Associate Degree in Nursing Program at Oakton College, the student will be prepared to:

  1. Collaborate with patients and families to assist patients in meeting their health needs (Maslow), while demonstrating an understanding of the patients’ developmental levels (Erickson) and basic needs.
  2. Communicate therapeutically with patients and families.
  3. Identify patient and family teaching plans to maintain and promote health.
  4. Identify the importance of being a patient advocate while recognizing human dignity and cultural diversity.
  5. Apply the nursing process in providing safe, physical and psycho-social care for patients and families.
  6. Demonstrate basic management skills in providing nursing care for patients and families (e.g. time management, organizational skills, knowledge of role of nurse and other health team members).
  7. Describe technology in implementing safe nursing practice.
  8. Discuss accepted nursing standards of practice and professional ethics.
  9. Identify the importance of professional activities and role of the nurse.

Nursing student learning outcomes for level 2:

Upon completion of the Associate Degree in Nursing Program at Oakton College, the graduate will be prepared to:

  1. Collaborate with the patient, family and health team to assist in meeting patients’ health needs (Maslow) by using judgment and interventions appropriate to patients' developmental levels (Erickson).
  2. Communicate effectively with patients, families, and health teams.
  3. Implement patient and family teaching plans to maintain and promote health.
  4. Act as a patient advocate for patients and families while recognizing human dignity and cultural diversity.
  5. Integrate the nursing process to provide safe, physical and psycho-social care for patients and families.
  6. Implement effective management skills in providing nursing care for patients and families. (e.g. delegation, supervision, prioritization).
  7. Utilize technology in the implementation of safe nursing practice.
  8. Employ the accepted nursing standards of practice and professional ethics.
  9. Participate in professional and service activities.
