Nursing student learning outcomes for level 1:
Upon completion of the first two semesters of the Associate Degree in Nursing Program at Oakton College, the student will be prepared to:
- Collaborate with patients and families to assist patients in meeting their health needs (Maslow), while demonstrating an understanding of the patients’ developmental levels (Erickson) and basic needs.
- Communicate therapeutically with patients and families.
- Identify patient and family teaching plans to maintain and promote health.
- Identify the importance of being a patient advocate while recognizing human dignity and cultural diversity.
- Apply the nursing process in providing safe, physical and psycho-social care for patients and families.
- Demonstrate basic management skills in providing nursing care for patients and families (e.g. time management, organizational skills, knowledge of role of nurse and other health team members).
- Describe technology in implementing safe nursing practice.
- Discuss accepted nursing standards of practice and professional ethics.
- Identify the importance of professional activities and role of the nurse.

- Communicate effectively with patients, families, and health teams.
- Implement patient and family teaching plans to maintain and promote health.
- Act as a patient advocate for patients and families while recognizing human dignity and cultural diversity.
- Integrate the nursing process to provide safe, physical and psycho-social care for patients and families.
- Implement effective management skills in providing nursing care for patients and families. (e.g. delegation, supervision, prioritization).
- Utilize technology in the implementation of safe nursing practice.
- Employ the accepted nursing standards of practice and professional ethics.
- Participate in professional and service activities.
