Oakton College participates in the Illinois Articulation Initiative (IAI), a statewide agreement that allows transfer of the General Education Core Curriculum (GECC) between participating institutions. Completion of the General Education Core Curriculum at any participating college or university in Illinois assures transferring students that lower-division general education requirements for an associate or bachelor’s degree have been satisfied. This agreement is in effect for students entering an associate or baccalaureate degree-granting institution as a first-time freshman in summer 1998 (and thereafter). Courses approved by IAI for transfer have an assigned IAI code.

General Education Core Curriculum

The following IAI codes identify qualifying general education courses; IAI codes are included on the list of IAI General Education Courses.

IAI C (Communications)
IAI H (Humanities)
IAI M (Mathematics)
IAI S (Social/Behavioral Sciences)
IAI F (Fine Arts)
IAI L (Life Sciences)
IAI P (Physical Sciences)

Students pursuing an Associate in Arts (A.A.) degree at Oakton, or planning to transfer to an institution participating in the IAI, must follow the IAI general education core curriculum of 37 to 41 semester credit hours. This includes:

Communications: Three courses (9 credit hours)
Mathematics: One course (3 credit hours)
Physical and Life Sciences: Two courses (7-8 credit hours)
Social and Behavioral Sciences: Three courses (9 credit hours)
Humanities and Fine Arts: Three courses (9 credit hours)

Students may use two or more IAI general education courses with the same IAI code to fulfill general education requirements for Associate in Arts (A.A.) degree unless otherwise indicated in course description.

Students pursuing an Associate in Science (A.S.) degree at Oakton, or planning to transfer to an institution participating in the IAI, must follow the IAI general education core curriculum of 40 to 42 semester credit hours. This includes:

Communications: Three courses (9 credit hours)
Mathematics: Two courses (9 credit hours)
Physical and Life Sciences: Three courses (10-12 credit hours)
Social and Behavioral Sciences: Two courses (6 credit hours)
Humanities and Fine Arts: Two courses (6 credit hours)

Students may use two or more IAI general education courses with the same IAI code to fulfill general education requirements for Associate in Science (A.S.) degree unless otherwise indicated in course descriptions.

Students pursuing an Associate of Science in Engineering (A.S.E.), Associate in Fine Arts (A.F.A. - Art or A.F.A. - Music) degree or Associate in General Studies (A.G.S.) degree at Oakton must follow the IAI general education curriculum for that degree.

See IAI General Education Courses page for detailed information about the general education requirements for all of Oakton’s associate degrees.

Note: Most Oakton courses that are not part of the IAI general education core curriculum component do transfer. The IAI code simply indicates the course is part of the IAI general education core curriculum component.

Majors

The Illinois Articulation Initiative (IAI) has developed a list of courses that can be taken by students at community colleges and would be accepted as credits toward their Major at the receiving baccalaureate institutions. Credits are either accepted as course equivalents or counted as electives toward fulfilling the Major requirements.

The IAI Major courses were established for students who have not chosen a transfer school. Once the transfer institution is selected, students should consult the appropriate transfer guide as soon as possible for guidance on the most successful transfer path. IAI major codes are listed with course descriptions.

See an advisor in the Office of Advising, Transitions and Student Success for more information, or read about the IAI at iTransfer.org.
